Patrick A. Smith, MD is a Michigan native who earned his undergraduate degree graduating with honors from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He remained in Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Smith completed a surgical internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center as well as his orthopaedic residency. Upon finishing his residency, he was awarded the "Parke-Davis Research Award" at the University of Michigan. He then moved to Columbus, Georgia where he completed a one year sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Dr. Jack C. Hughston at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic

Dr. Smith joined Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 1986 and specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He has served as the Head Team Physician for the University of Missouri athletic department since 1991; he recently received the "Sports Medicine Hall of Fame Award" by the Missouri Athletic Trainer's Association for outstanding service, dedication and contribution in the field of Sports Medicine (June 2010). He also treats high school and college athletes from across the region. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the program and meeting director for the Big 12 Conference team physicians' annual conference.

Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and also as a subspecialty, board certified in Sports Medicine. He is a member of the numerous organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Columbia Regional Hospital from 1998 until 2009.

Dr. Smith has published numerous writings; one of his newest being a contributing chapter author for a procedural textbook on ACL Surgery, titled, "Primary ACL Reconstruction: Hybrid Fixation and All-Inside Techniques" (2010). He is also active in presenting lectures to organizations both nationally and internationally; more recently in June 2009, Dr. Smith lectured as part of the International faculty for the 3rd Symposium on Operative and Biologic Treatments in Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Munich, Germany. As far as teaching, he finds great pleasure in demonstrating innovative techniques to other surgeons in laboratory and operative settings. Dr. Smith is also actively engaged in research and development  of new minimally invasive procedures while also participating in national clinical studies. His particular areas of interest include arthroscopic shoulder stabilization and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, as well as anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Currently, he is involved in  national clinical research trials involving (ACL) reconstruction techniques, namely  the “All-Inside”  procedure. Dr. Smith is one of three surgeons from across the country conducting this research; the purpose of this study is to verify postoperative pain relief and stability achieved with this new minimally invasive ACL reconstruction done through three small incisions. In addition, Dr. Smith actually performed the very first “All-Inside” double bundle ACL reconstruction placing two tendon grafts across the knee joint to replace the ACL which more closely reproduces normal ACL anatomy; this continues to be a focus in his clinical practice to optimize outcomes for all involved patients.

Dr. Smith’s practice philosophy is based on personalized patient care. He truly enjoys patient interaction, not just from the standpoint of helping his patients with their orthopedic problem, but  getting to know them on a personal basis. This provides the foundation for  maintaining excellence in his medical practice—it truly is about the whole person. Other individuals working directly with Dr. Smith on his team are Bill Elliott, OPA, registered medical assistant, Sarah Chilton, and James Ronan who assists administratively and clinically with research & development.

Dr. Smith and his wife, Karen, have five children. He enjoys coaching youth basketball, golfing and remains very active in the local community.
